About Me
Hi! My name is Rayma Smith. I'm a
California native recently transplanted in
Beaumont, Texas. In December 2006 I
returned to the US after living abroad in
Adana, Turkey.

I've always been most happy when I'm in
the service of other people. In 2003, I
graduated from a private Vocational Nursing
school in Sacramento. In the past 5 years
I've worked as a nurse in a number of
settings. What I kept coming back to was
pregnant mothers. It wasn't long before I
discovered that my interest in mothers,
childbirth and babies wasn't a passing
interest, it is most definitely my passion.
Before my career in nursing began, I was fully immersed in pregnancy,
childbirth and natural parenting philosophies. After assisting at the births of
several friends, I started studying labor assisting techniques and alternative
methods of non-pharmaceutical pain relief.

Being on a military base, at that time, I heard about my fair share of
epidurals, inductions and cesarean section surgeries. While I knew that in
some instances, medical intervention was a necessary course of action, it
seemed odd to me that more often than not I was hearing about the
interventions prior to any mention of the mothers experience. I wanted to
change that.

After 8 years of experience I have learned many lessons, but the one that
stands out most in my mind is that I absolutely LOVE this work!

In January 2008, I began formally pursuing Birth and Postpartum Doula
certification, as well as my Childbirth Educator diploma through
Childbirth
International. My hope is that with my experience and certifications, I'll be
able to help effect positive change in Southeast Texas, an area that greatly
needs Doula services and Childbirth Education.
